Terms of Service.

Plain-English summary.

By using Sketchy Labels you agree to these terms. The service reads ingredient labels and scores them for informational purposes only; it is not a substitute for professional medical, dietary, or regulatory advice. You are responsible for how you act on what it tells you. Any dispute is resolved under the laws of Ontario, Canada.

Acceptance & eligibility.

By accessing or using Sketchy Labels, whether through the website, the mobile app, or any other feature, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

You must be at least 13 years old to use the service. If you are under 18, you confirm that you have permission from a parent or guardian. The app is not offered in every country’s app store, and it is your responsibility to make sure your use complies with local laws.

What the service is.

Sketchy Labels is an ingredient analysis tool. You submit a product label, by camera, barcode, or typing the ingredients, and the service parses it, rates each ingredient, and returns an ingredient score from 0 to 100 across five tiers: Excellent, Good, Mixed, Some Concerns, and High Concern. How the score is built is set out in our methodology.

Ratings come from AI cross-referenced against public regulatory and research databases, including USDA, EU REACH, and NIH PubChem. Sketchy Labels aggregates public data; it is not original research. The score is a heuristic: a starting point for an informed choice, not a definitive safety verdict. It does not account for every individual circumstance, concentration level, or jurisdiction.

Not medical, legal, or regulatory advice.

The score does not replace a doctor, allergist, dermatologist, regulator, or attorney. Sketchy Labels is not a medical device. Don’t use scores or household-profile flags to manage allergies, medical conditions, pregnancy, infant feeding, or treatment decisions without consulting a qualified professional. Anyone with sensitivities, or who is pregnant, should consult a professional.

Ingredient ratings (Beneficial, Fair, Caution, Avoid) and regulatory notes reflect general research. They are not regulatory classifications, clinical diagnoses, or medical recommendations, and nothing on the platform is a diagnosis or treatment recommendation.

Accounts.

The web scanner works without an account. The app needs one, created with your email address or with Apple or Google sign-in. Keep your sign-in details secure; you are responsible for activity on your account.

If we suspect your account has been compromised or misused, we may sign you out, ask you to verify it, or suspend it while we look into it. You can delete your account at any time under Account in the app.

Acceptable use.

Sketchy Labels is for personal, non-commercial use: helping people understand what is in the products they buy. You agree not to:

• Scrape or harvest ingredient data or scores in bulk, or query the service automatically, without our written permission.
• Bypass or try to bypass rate limits, bot protection, scan limits, or any other usage controls.
• Reverse-engineer, break, or overload the service or any part of its infrastructure.
• Use results to defame a brand, or present Sketchy Labels ratings as official certifications or endorsements.
• Use the service in any way that violates applicable law or the rights of others.

To keep the service free, anonymous web scans are limited to 10 every 3 minutes and 200 per 24 hours per IP address. Normal use never comes close. We may restrict access from sources that abuse the service.

User content.

Some features let you send us content: label photos, typed ingredient lists, corrections and reports, feedback on a result, and contact messages. It stays yours.

You give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use it to run and improve the service, for example to fix an ingredient rating after a correction. We will never sell it, never share what you scan with brands, and never publish your name alongside it unless you ask us to credit you.

Our intellectual property.

The score, methodology, written content, brand, and visual design of Sketchy Labels are ours. The underlying source data (USDA, EU REACH, NIH PubChem) is public and attributed. Ratings generated by the service may not be republished, sold, or built into a competing product without permission.

We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the service and view results for personal, non-commercial purposes.

Product names, brand names, and trademarks shown in results belong to their owners. Sketchy Labels is independent and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any brand it scores.

Payment & subscriptions.

Scanning is free. Premium is an optional subscription bought in the app through the App Store or Google Play, which handle billing, taxes, and refunds under their own policies. The price is shown before you buy.

Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel in your App Store or Google Play account settings. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge; Premium stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for. See pricing for what Premium includes.

Disclaimers.

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness, or availability. In particular:

• AI reading of a label can make mistakes, and AI models and databases may not reflect the latest research.
• Not every ingredient is in a public database; for those, ratings rely on the AI’s trained knowledge.
• Quantities are estimated from label position, since manufacturers rarely disclose percentages.
• The same ingredient can affect people differently depending on amount, health, allergies, and other ingredients.

Limitation of liability.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Sketchy Labels, DEFINEWEB INC., and its founders are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages arising from your use of the service, including harm or loss from relying on ratings, purchasing decisions based on results, or inaccuracies in AI analysis.

Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim (zero for free users). Some jurisdictions don’t allow certain exclusions or limits; there, they apply only to the extent the law allows.

Indemnity.

If you use the service in breach of these terms or the law, and someone brings a claim against us because of it, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and costs, including legal fees, to the extent the law allows.

Termination.

You can stop using the service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, or if we have to for legal reasons. If we ever shut the service down, we’ll give account holders reasonable notice by email.

Sections that by their nature should continue (intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnity, and governing law) survive termination.

Governing law & disputes.

These terms, and any dispute arising from or relating to the service, are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable there, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. The courts of Ontario, Canada have exclusive jurisdiction over any such dispute.

Before going to court, please contact us so we can try to resolve it informally.

Changes to these terms.

We may update these terms as the service evolves. The latest version is always at this URL, with the date of the last update above. For material changes, we’ll email account holders at least 14 days before they take effect. Using Sketchy Labels after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.
