A synthetic preservative used in cosmetics to prevent microbial growth, permitted at up to 0.4% alone or 0.8% in mixtures with other parabens. Fair: EU Annex V entry 12 sets a standard maximum use level; SCCS confirms it is safe at these concentrations.
